New Post: Running and talking on a cell phone
For the past twelve years or so I have been a runner. I have probably logged 12,000+ miles of training in a lot of states and a lot of trails and paths. To say I have seen a lot while running would be an understatement. My adventures have included being chased by a pack of kids, dogs, and other obstacles. Dodging cars? Oh yes. Seeing crime happen and reporting it? Check.
Being out in a torrential downpour and seeing a funnel cloud? Yes. I have seen a lot.
One thing I am starting to see more of lately is people who run and, at the same time, talk on their cell phone. This one used to surprise me a bit, but now I just come to expect it. Questions I have about this new behavior:
1) Are you that busy that you need to be talking on your cell phone while running?
2) Is that even really safe to be doing?
3) Will the world stop if you do not make/take that call?
I have to admit, running for me is a stress reliever, a time to get away and think through whatever is on my plate and think about how I might handle various situations. Sometimes the run is just to enjoy the scenery and appreciate life. So, all of that to say this may explain a bit of my view of running while talking on a cell phone.
Do I run with a smart phone? Yes.
Do I engage in conversations while trying to better my 5K time? No.
I can remember when I had my first cell phone in 1992 and would never think about talking on it anywhere in public. My how times have changed. People can do whatever they want, but I am going to save my phone conversations for after my run.
